Safety Systems Thinking

Forget operating theatres as the earner in the hospital setting, the central focus and the easy pickings in the dollar stakes. The operating theatres are as interdependant on the rest of the hospital as the hospital accountant in on the operating theatre revenue. Good ‘Systems Thinking’ incorporates the idea of sustainability, and also the idea that ALL inputs and outputs need to be included in the Systems formula. It is the second part that is problematic. As a governance champion in health care, be you a unit manager, bed access manager or executive, if your Cognitive model is incomplete, then so is your ‘safety systems’ thinking.

and therefore, so is your ability to deliver on the govenance of safety, one of the first assessment criteria in Quality and Safety accreditation. The mathematics is very easy. Working out what should be in the equation? Now THAT’S the difficult part! Pete!
