Big Miss

Every day when we feed out hay, the old man insists that we count all the cattle.

It’s not necessarily all that easy, though if I concentrate and take care to spy the calves between the cows, it is possible to get the count right the first or second time.

The interesting thing about being so focussed on counting is that it means we miss things that would otherwise seem obvious.

Like a subtle change in the condition of an animal or the environment that would alert us to potential problems or flag some action we might need to take.

The same thing happens in the governance of healthcare.

We get so busy counting the numbers that we don’t see the slip in the safety culture.
