Annual Competencies

Every year every clinical nurse in Australia has to successfully demonstrate a number of essential clinical competencies.

Further, professional development has to be attended to and your learning outcomes logged. 

In order to keep patients safe, these matters are a condition of maintaining professional registration. 

What I find interesting as a nursing philosopher is that nurses who have been promoted to managerial ranks seem to have no similar demands placed upon them in order to prove baseline competence in meeting legislative requirements, providing effective systems of work, creating humane rostering practices and resolving conflict with ‘Just Culture’ outcomes, core competencies that are essential in keeping their clinical nurses safe. 

If there is a direct correlation between staff wellbeing and patient safety, then annual managerial competence may be just as vital, if not more so, than clinical competencies in keeping patients free from preventable medical errors, the third leading cause of death in the western world. 


PS, when I use the word ‘safe’, I refer to the Workplace Health and Safety definition which implies in its use reference to both physical AND mental health.
