That Space

I have to thank the artist in residence at the Brooke Street Pier in Hobart.

.

We met but for a short period of time and we talked about the challenges of painting in an open plan public space.

.

We talked about the presence of onlookers like me, bystanders who trespass into her cognitive space and distract her from the task at hand, thereby robbing her of those existential moments essential for the composition of her unique art;

.

And we talked about the ability to drop into 'that space' which sidelines all extraneous interference and privileges her inner voice.

.

A few days later I was working with a University of Tasmania nursing student, and we had pretty much the same discussion.

.

Her job was to remove a patient's Laryngeal Mask; and the transgression into her cognitive space was all the action and activity going on in Recovery at the time, not to mention the anaesthetist prowling at the foot of the bed.

.

My reassurance allowed her to tap into the moment safely and successfully, and LMA was uneventfully expelled.

.

How much easier things became when she allowed herself to find that space.

.

Pete!
